Gynera belongs to a group of medicines called combined pills (oral contraceptive pills) that contain 2 types of female hormones: estrogen (ethinylestradiol) and progestogen (gestodene). These hormones prevent pregnancy in 3 ways: by preventing release of an egg from the ovaries, thickening the secretions from the cervix, which makes it more difficult for sperm to enter the womb, and preventing thickening of the lining of the womb required for implantation of the egg.
